Bob Dylan debuts at the Gaslight Cafe in New York City.


1963
Jerry Lee Lewis' contract with Sun Records expires. Within the month he'll sign with Smash Records.


1967
In the British papers, the U.K. government takes out advertisements explaining its recent enacting of legislation outlawing pirate radio. The prime reason is the interference with ship-to-shore radio frequencies caused by pirate radio stations broadcasting from boats anchored off Britian's coast.


1968
Eric Clapton records his guitar solo on The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."


1969
After a show in the Memphis Mid-Southern Coliseum, James Brown announces his retirement from live performance after July 4, 1970. The hardest working man in show business says he's tired. At the same time, he's fighting a paternity suit filed in Sacramento, California by a one-time president of the local James Brown fan club.

Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" peaks at #7 on the pop singles chart.


1972
John and Yoko appear on Jerry Lewis' Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.


1974
George Harrison inaugurates his new Dark Horse label with the release of The Place I Love by a group called Splinter. Harrison produced the album.


1975
The Rolling Stones' "Out Of Time" peaks at #81 on the pop chart while ZZ Top's "Tush" peaks at #20.


1976
Fleetwood Mac tops the U.S. LP chart for the first time with Fleetwood Mac.


1980
Paul Simon's One Trick Pony enters the album charts, as does The Cars' Panorama, The Allman Brothers' Reach For The Sky, and Eddie Money's Playing For Keeps.

Paul McCartney releases Tug Of War.

No. 1 Hit: "Hard to Say I'm Sorry," Chicago.

Neil Young's "This Note's For You" wins the MTV award for Best Video - it was very ironic since the channel had initially refused to air the video.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are banned from practicing on their own field, Three Rivers Stadium, because The Rolling Stones are rehearsing for their upcoming concert.


1990
Former CCR member and brother to John, Tom Fogerty, dies of respiratory failure from tuberculosis at age 48.


1993
Don Henley, Jimmy Buffett, Elton John, Sting, and Aerosmith perform at a benefit concert in Boston for Walden Woods.


1995
Bruce Hornsby and Branford Marsalis perform the National Anthem in Baltimore's Camden Yards before Cal Ripken Jr. sets baseball's all-time consecutive games played record.


1997
David Bowie launches a six-week tour of North America in Vancouver, British Columbia. The tour hits clubs, ballrooms, and theaters.


1997
Roy Husky Jr., regarded as one of country music’s best upright bassists, dies of cancer at Columbia Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. Husky performed with such icons as Chet Atkins, Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash, Vince Gill, and George Jones.


1998
Brad Warren, of the Warren Brothers, interrupts touring to be present for the arrival of his new baby, Sage Warren, at Nashville hospital. Brad's brother and bandmate Brett performs a scheduled appearance in Portland, Ore., as a solo act.


2001
Atari Teenage Riot co-founder Carl Crack dies at the age of 30. The cause of death is not announced, though Crack is understood to have undergone treatment for psychiatric problems in the past.


2006
For the first time in 30 years, Bob Dylan tops The Chart Toppers 200 with “Modern Times.” Not only is it the legendary songwriter’s first album to reach the throne since Desire in 1976, it’s also his highest debuting album and his best sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.
