The original beach movie, Beach Party, debuts. The film stars Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. Music is provided by Dick Dale & the Del Tones.

Time magazine reviews the Beatles' movie Hard Days Night. The headline reads "Beatles Blow It" and advises readers to "avoid this film at all costs." Life magazine writes "some Marx Brothers surrealism." A week later, the Los Angeles Herald Examiner reviews the performances as "amusing and engaging." Ah, critics.

The Dave Clark 5 lead singer Mike Smith, breaks two ribs when he is pulled off the stage by overzealous fans during a show in Chicago.

Frank Zappa's Mother of Invention record Just Another Band from L.A. at U.C.L.A. It's the last Zappa album to incldue former Turtles Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. The two leave to record on their own as Flo and Eddie.

The Bee Gees attain their first of seven Number One records in America. It's "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" From here, the group turns to Barry Gibb's falsetto and a disco beat which will jump start their careers.

Vocalist Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band marries actress Faye Dunaway. They divorce in 1979.


1976
No. 1 Hit: "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," Elton John & Kiki Dee. The song is the first on which John sings to hit No. 1 on the British charts.

One of the successes of the year is Rickie Lee Jones. Her debut album goes platinum and kicks out a Top Five hit, "Chuck E's in Love."

At a Marshall Tucker Band show in Long Beach, CA, a fan steals a car and drives it through two banks of metal exit doors and one concrete wall.

An L.A. judge throws out a lawsuit against Ozzy Osbourne. The lawsuit had been filed by the parents of a teenager who committed suicide while listening to Ozzy's song, "Suicide Solution."

Charges of assault and property damage are filed against Guns 'n' Roses lead singer Axl Rose in connection with a riot during a show in St. Louis.


1995
Alanis Morissette's biting "You Oughta Know" soars to No. 1 and is the most requested tune on rock radio.

Rapper LL Cool J marries Simone Johnson, the mother of his two children.


1997
Garth Brooks plays a free concert in New York's Central Park. The concert was to coincide with the release of Brooks' new album Sevens. However, release of the album is delayed.

The 7-year-old son of Grammy-winning producer Bill Bottrell falls to his death from a cliff on the Mendocino County coast in Northern California. Bottrell’s son, William, wanders away late in the afternoon and is later found at the bottom of the cliff. Bottrell won a Grammy for producing Sheryl Crow’s 1994 "All I Wanna Do."


1999
It’s Woodstock ‘99 all over again when violence erupts outside a Dave Matthews Band concert in Hartford, Conn. Unruly behavior in the parking lot of the Meadows Music Theater requires intervention by riot police and leads to a total of 55 arrests.


2001
American harmonica virtuoso Larry Adler, who was blacklisted during the McCarthy era and had long made Britain his home, dies at a London hospital following a long illness. He is 87.


2001
Guitarist William Lewis (Billy) Byrd dies in Nashville of natural causes. He is 81. Byrd is known as one of the first to introduce electric guitar to country music.
