Pat MacDonald of Timbuk 3 is born. MacDonald and his wife, Barbara, form the duo. Their biggest hit is “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades,” a top 20 hit in the eighties.

ABC-Paramount acquires British teen idol Cliff Richard's hit, "Livin' Doll" for U.S. release.

Chubby Checker performs "The Twist" on American TV for the first time on American Bandstand.

Rod Stewart makes his television debut with the Hootchie Coo Men on the British television show, The Beat Room.

On the 25th anniversary of the U.S. dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, 20,000 people, paying $5.50 to $8.50, gathered in New York's Shea Stadium for an anti-war rock festival. The attendance is below expectations despite acts such as Janis Joplin, Paul Simon, Steppenwolf, and Johnny Winters.

Procul Harum records a concert with the Edmonton Symphony in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Portions will be released as the album Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. "Conquistador" will be a surprise hit single.

No. 1 Hit: "The Morning After," Maureen McGovern. The song is the theme to the film The Poseidon Adventure.

Stevie Wonder suffers head injuries when a car he was riding in collides with a logging truck in North Carolina. He was in intensive care for four days because of a coma induced by a brain contusion. Doctors say because he is blind, the impact of the accident is magnified three times. He recovers but suffers some permanent damage - the loss of his sense of smell.


1979
The Cars don't pay attention to the sophomore jinx predictions and go two-for-two: Candy-O is their second straight album to go platinum.

Pink Floyd The Wall, a $10 million film version of of Pink Floyd's best selling double-album, The Wall has its U.S. premiere in New York City. The film has virtually no dialogue or play. It's a series of surreal episodes equating rock & roll with fascism, women and sex with pain and death and life in general with an inescapable madness. Though it does well at the box office, the critics have a problem with all the negativity.

No. 1 Hit: "Ghostbusters," Ray Parker Jr. Huey Lewis sues Parker, saying the Academy Award-nominated song sounds too much like his "I Want a New Drug."

The Beastie Boys sued the city of Jacksonville, Florida for including the phrase "mature audience" on their concert tickets and ads.

The Traveling Wilburys begin a surprise mini-tour prior to releasing their debut album. The group consists of George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Rob Orbison, and Tom Petty.

U2 bassist Adam Clayton is arrested at his home in Dublin, Ireland for pot possession.

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley make their first public appearance as newlyweds in Budapest while Jackson shoots a Communist-themed video.

Lisa Loeb started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with "Stay (I Missed You)," a No.6 hit in the UK.

Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder videotapes the Ramones placing their hands in cement on the Hollywood Rock Walk prior to a Ramones show at The Palace. The Ramones claim this is their last show ever.

The soundtrack to the film She's The One, starring Edward Burns and Jennifer Aniston, is released. The album is record by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and features the single, "Walls."

Vince Neil, former singer of ’80’s metal band Motley Crue, attempts to play a show at an Indiana club. The show, starting more than four hours late, ends after only three songs. Neil claims that he isn’t feeling well, and that the audience of “rednecks” don’t appreciate his talent. No refunds are offered, and police, called to the scene shortly thereafter, barely stave off a riot of over 500 irate ticket-holders.


1998
Indian students stage a Peace Festival in Mumbai for the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing to protest their country’s recent nuclear weapons testing. Peace Together 98, on the campus lawns of St. Andrews College in the Mumbai suburb of Bandra, India features free performances from top Hindi pop artists such as Lucky Ali, Sagarika, Mehnaaz, Uday Benega, and Vikas Bhalla.

Nat Gonella, one of Britain’s most respected jazz trumpeters, dies in Gosport, Hampshire. He is 90. Gonella led one of the most popular dance bands of the ’30s and was regarded by some as the U.K.’s answer to Louis Armstrong.

Ted Nugent, the singer/songwriter, guitarist, politician, self-proclaimed outdoorsman, and morning talk-show host embarks on a 15-city U.S. jaunt in Los Angeles. Bassist Johnny G. and drummer Tommy Aldridge accompany Nugent on the tour. Intencities in 15 cities!

The last new episode of Magic Johnson’s talk show The Magic Hour airs.

Whitney Houston became one of the highest-paid musicians in the world after signing a new deal with Arista records, said to be worth more than $100m.


2002
Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher suffers from whiplash and shock after he is injured in a car accident in Indianapolis. The band is forced to postpone upcoming concerts in Philadelphia and Boston.


2004
Funk legend Rick James is found dead of a heart attack at his Los Angeles home. He is 56. An autopsy shows that he had methamphetamine, cocaine, Vicodin, and Xanax in his system at the time of Death.

Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer, one of the stars of the 1990s Buena Vista Social Club CD series, dies in Havana at the age of 78. The artist had returned three days earlier from a one-month tour of Europe, and a week before dying he appeared in pain singing at a festival in Barcelona.


2007
Marilyn Manson was being sued by a former band member who said he was owed $20 million in shared profits. Stephen Bier, who played keyboards under the stage name Madonna Wayne Gacy, claimed he was not paid properly over a period of almost two decades. In legal papers filed in Los Angeles, Bier claimed Manson falsely told him the band was not making much money and used band money to buy a $2 million home and collect Nazi memorabilia, including coat hangers used by Adolf Hitler.
