American Bandstand goes national on ABC-TV. It started in 1952 as a local hit parade show in Philadelphia. Dick Clark became the host in 1956 and his first guests are the Chordettes.

Former Foo Fighters guitarist Pat Smear is born.

Marilyn Monroe is found dead of "acute barbiturate poisoning," which the coroner records as a "probable suicide." Because of a lack of evidence, investigators can not classify her death as suicide or homicide. Also, some conspiracy theories involve John and Robert Kennedy with her death, while other theories suggest CIA or mafia complicity. An American Tragedy.

Beastie Boy M.C.A. is born Adam Yauch in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Beach Boys record "When I Grow Up to Be a Man."

Sonny & Cher play their first British concert at London’s 100 Club.


1966
The Beatles album Revolver is released in the U.K. by Capitol. The hit singles off the album include "Yellow Submarine," "Eleanor Rigby," and "Got to Get You into My Life." The U.S. version of the album will be released four days later.

Bobbie Gentry releases her No. 1 "Ode to Billie Joe."

Pink Floyd release their debut album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in England.

Clive Davis signs a young band called Aerosmith to CBS Records after seeing them play Max’s Kansas City in New York. They receive $125,000 for their services.

Svengali Kim Fowley brings together the four girls who will form the Runaways, including Joan Jett and Lita Ford.

Drummer Jeff Porcaro dies of cardiac arrest at age 38. The co-founder of Toto was spraying insecticide in his yard and developed an allergic reaction that triggered the heart attack.

Michael Jackson performs a concert in Wales, during which he collapses three times.

Billy Idol is admitted to Burbank, Calif.’s St. Joseph’s Medical Center after collapsing from a drug overdose in a Los Angeles nightclub. He’s released two days later.

Bruce Springsteen sues two London bootleggers who were distributing an album attributed to him titled Unearthed.


1998
It is announced that George Strait leads the list of nominees for the 32nd annual Country Music Assn. Awards, nabbing five nominations, including entertainer, album, and single of the year. These make Strait the most nominated artist - at 47 noms - in the history of the competition.


2001
The Foo Fighters treat 300 lucky fans to a rare club show at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, Calif. Winners are chosen from a pool of E-mail entries submitted to the group's official website.

Daniel Kelly, founding father of Irish-American folk-pop band the Kelly Family, dies in Berlin of undisclosed causes after a long illness. He is 71.

Smash Mouth release their new album Get the Picture?. The band celebrate with a performance in a New York Toys 'R' Us.

The Rolling Stones are forced to postpone a gig in Benidorm, Spain after 60-year-old Mick Jagger contracts laryngitis.

Lynyrd Skynyrd cancel the remainder of their Party of a Lifetime tour after lead guitarist Gary Rossington’s doctor tells him to take it easy. Rossington underwent open-heart surgery in February.


2005
Mariah Carey tops the American singles chart for a tenth straight week with "We Belong Together."
