Bon (Ronald Belford) Scott, lead singer of AC/DC, is born in Kirriemuir, Scotland. He dies Feb. 19, 1980 of alcohol abuse and is replaced by Brian Johnson.

Debbie Sledge of Sister Sledge is born. Sisters Debbie, Joan, Kim and Kathie Sledge of North Philadelphia begin recording as Sister Sledge in 1971. The groups biggest hit is the million-selling No. 2 song "We Are Family" in 1979.

Pat Boone released his version of "Ain't That a Shame" which became his first #1 hit.

Dick Clark made his debut as host of "Bandstand" on a Philadelphia TV station. The name was changed to "American Bandstand" when it went to ABC-TV.

Johnny Cash, following in the footsteps of ex-Sun Records artist Carl Perkins, signs with Columbia Records.

A Minneapolis based Catholic youth magazine, "Contacts," launches a campaign for "clean lyrics in pop songs." Songs they target include Elvis Presley's "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck" because it promotes going steady. Wow, and all this time I thought it was "Wear My Wring Around Your Neck."

Jim Kerr, singer for Simple Minds is born. That's Jim on the right. You forgot about him, didn't you - and after all those times he told you not to. Oh well, he is still alive and kicking.

"House Of The Rising Sun" by the Animals hits #1 on the U.K. singles chart.

The Temptations perform at the Valley Forge Music Festival with David Ruffin. He was apparently fired by Motown Records because he wanted to change the group's image from "the suits, ties and patent shoes" to "go deep into the soul bag."

Jim Morrison is buried in Paris Pere Lachaise Cemetery, his family having disowned him. The often-vandalized grave becomes a shrine for fans.

Paul McCartney & Wings, traveling aboard their double-decker bus, open a 26-stop European tour with a stop in Chateauvillon, France. It's McCartney's first time on the road since the Beatles broke up.

Crosby, Stills, and Nash start their reunion tour in Seattle.

The Jacksons begin a 36 city tour. The show will gross $5.5 million. They donate $100,000 to the Atlanta Children's Foundation follwing a show at the Omni in Atlanta. Later, Epic Records releases "The Jacksons Live."

The Police's "Every Breath You Take" peaks at #1 on the pop chart - a position it will hold for 9 weeks.

Elton John's "Reg Strikes Back" LP enters the chart. It will stay for 19 weeks and features the hit, "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That."

Keith Richards right index finger becomes inflamed after a concert in Glasgow. It is diagnosed as being septic. A week of shows are postponed, the first time that the Stones miss a show due to a band member's illness or injury.

President George Bush presents a National Medal of Art to country music singer Roy Acuff.

The Rolling Stones begin a month of sessions at Ron Wood's house in Ireland.

John Mellencamp's "Dance Naked" LP enters the chart. The album features the hit "Wild Night", a duet with MeShell Ndege Ocello.

The Kiss tribute album, "Kiss My Ass, Classic Kiss Regrooved" enters the chart. The LP features Kiss songs done by artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Stevie Wonder and Garth Brooks.

The Grateful Dead give their last concert with leader Jerry Garcia at Chicago's Soldier Field. Jerry dies a month later while in drug rehab of a heart attack.

Robert "Waddy" Wachtel, a musician and arranger who worked on albums by Linda Ronstadt and Fleetwood Mac, and his wife are arrested for investigation of possessing child pornography, allegedly found on his personal computer.

Scott Weiland misses his second court date, stemming from drug possession charges earlier in the year. His second absence prompts the presiding judge to issue a bench warrant for the rockers arrest.

Babyface is honored by the state of Indiana, which renames a 25-mile stretch of federal highway (Interstate Route 65) as Kenneth Babyface Edmonds Highway. In conjunction with the honor, the Indianapolis native donates $50,000 to establish VH1s Save The Music campaign in the state.

Rolling Stone singer Mick Jagger's marriage to model Jerry Hall is officially annulled in a London court, ending eight years of marriage and a 22 year relationship.

Kenny Chesney becomes the first artist in five years to sell out Cowboys in Arlington, Texas. The same night, Gary Allan, Chad Brock, Rhett Akins and Jewel are also playing in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.

Minutes before show time, singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter cancels a concert at Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts in Springfield, Mo. A hall official breaks the news that Carpenter had to fly home to tend to a sick Golden Retriever.

James Hetfield, lead singer and guitarist of hard rock act Metallica, checks himself into an undisclosed rehab facility to undergo treatment for "alcoholism and other addictions."

A segment of Interstate 85 is declared The Alan Jackson Highway during a ceremony in the artists hometown, Newnan, Ga. The bill renaming the stretch of roadway between Palmetto and Highway 154, about an hour southwest of Atlanta, was introduced the previous fall and was subsequently signed by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue.
