Carly Simon is born in New York, daughter of the co-founder of Simon & Schuster publishing house. She wins the Best New Artist Grammy in 1971. Her biggest hit is the million-selling No. 1 single "Youre So Vain."

Ian McDonald of Foreigner is born in London. The groups biggest hits are the million sellers "I Want to Know What Love Is" (No. 1), "Waiting for a Girl Like You" (No. 2 for 10 weeks) and "Double Vision" (No. 2). He leaves the group in 1980.

Split Enz singer Tim Finn is born.
1954
David Paich of Toto is born. He and his father, Marty, win an Emmy Award for writing the theme to the TV series Ironside. Toto's biggest hits are "Africa," a No. 1 song in 1983, and "Rosanna," which never tops Chart Toppers' Hot 100 but stays at No. 2 for five weeks in 1982.

The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" is recorded live during a British TV broadcast. (Marianne Faithfull sings in the chorus.)

Guitarist Mick Taylor makes his performance debut with the Rolling Stones in Rome. He replaces Brian Jones, who later drowns on July 3.

The Hollies record "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother," with Elton John playing piano. The song reaches No. 7 on Chart Toppers' singles chart.

The Rolling Stones make their first British concert appearance in six years. It's the first of two dates at London's Wembley Stadium where 140,000 show up to hear them play.

Backup singer Patti Scialfa joins Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band just four days before the start of the Born In The U.S.A. tour is to begin.
1992
Planners of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame held a sneak preview of memorabilia that was going on display for the public the next day. Among the items included was one of Janis Joplin's favorite necklaces. The display was held at a Cleveland museum, because the Hall Of Fame wasn't built yet.

Billy Joel receives his high school diploma from Hicksville High School on Long Island, N.Y. He failed to graduate with his class in 1967 because of missed gym and English credits. The school choir sings Joels song "Summer, Highland Falls" at the ceremony.

Pearl Jam canceled their tour because of an ongoing feud with Ticketmaster. They contended that the ticket giant held a monopoly and charged fans too big of a surcharge on concert tickets.
1998
Goth rock band Marilyn Manson is forced to miss its appearance at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark due to drummer Ginger Fishs bout with mononucleosis.
2000
Countrys latest kid phenom, 12-year-old Billy Gilman, makes his Grand Ole Opry debut during the TNN-televised portion of the show. "This has been my dream ever since I started singing," Gilman said.
2003
Tim McGraw stages a benefit concert in Gulfport, Miss., at the Grand Casino Events Center. Proceeds from the show go to Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favres Forward Foundation for disabled and disadvantaged children in Mississippi and Wisconsin.
