Vocalist Colin Blunstone of the Zombies is born in Hatfield, England. The group's biggest hits are "Shes Not There," a No. 2 song in 1964, and "Time of the Season," a million-selling No. 3 hit in 1969.

Dire Straits bassist John Illsley is born.

Bass player Curt Smith of Tears for Fears is born in Bath, England. The group has two No. 1 hits in 1985: "Shout" and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World."

Sam Cooke starts a two week stay at New York's Copacabana Club. A 70-foot billboard announcing the engagement is erected in Times Square.

A Spaniard in the Works, John Lennons follow-up to In His Own Write, is published in England.

Procul Harum's first single, "A Whiter Shade of Pale" enters the U.S. pop charts where it will peak at #5.
1969
London, UK - Led Zeppelin appear on Maida Vale, a BBC Studios production. Setlist: "What Is and What Should Never Be," "Whole Lotta Love," "Communication Breakdown," "Travelling Riverside Blues."

The Celebration Of Life Festival is shut down by authorities after promoters fail to provide sufficient supplies of food, medical and sanitary facilities. Only eight of the advertised twenty-seven groups appeared and 150 of the festival goers were arrested.
1973
Al Kooper reunited with the original Blues Project for a concert in N.Y.'s Central Park.
1974
The Hues Corporation has a gold record with "Rock The Boat". It would reach #1 in July.
1975
The U.S. Attorney in Newark, New Jersey hands down indictments to 19 music industry executives in a two year investigation. Counts of income tax evasion and payola are leveled. Among those named include: Clive Davis, former president of Columbia Records and Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, architects of the Philadelphia sound of the 70's.
1984
In Dortmund, Germany, Yes are joined onstage by Jimmy Page, who joins in on a rendition of the Beatles' "I'm Down."
1990
Keyboardist Roger O'Donnell quit The Cure. He was replaced by Perry Bamonte, who was a roadie for the band.
1992
Billy Joel receives his high school diploma from Hicksville High School on Long Island, N.Y. He failed to graduate with his class in 1967 because of missed gym and English credits. The school choir sings Joels song "Summer, Highland Falls" at the ceremony.
1995
Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder left the stage after seven songs during a concert in San Francisco because of a stomach flu. Neil Young finished the show.
1998
Johnny Cash returns to a Nashville stage and performs for the first time since has was stricken with Shy-Drager Syndrome the preceding October. Cash joins a surprised Kris Kristofferson, who is singing Cashs "Sunday Morning Coming Down" at "Witness History II," a tribute to Cash and Waylon Jennings at the Ryman Auditorium.
1998
The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band starts a run of 12 European dates in London. Stops include Helsinki, Brussels, Paris, and Munich, as well as shows July 7 and 8 at the Montreux (Switzerland) Jazz Festival.
1999
Eric Clapton puts 100 of his guitars up for auction in New York at Christie's to raise money for his drug rehab clinic, the Crossroads Centre in Antigua. His 1956 Fender Stratocaster, named Brownie, was sold for a record $497,500. The guitar was used to record "Layla." The auction helped raise nearly $5 million for the clinic.

Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks weds actor Adrian Pasdar in Las Vegas.
