Bandleader Guy Lombardo is born in London, Ontario. Lombardo and His Royal Canadians are the only dance band to sell more than 100 million records. He is most familiar to later audiences for his annual New Year's Eve broadcasts during which he played his theme, "Auld Lang Syne."

1950
Ann Wilson of Heart is born.

1960
The Kingston Trio Show, to be aired six days a week at various times, debuts on CBS Radio. The five minute show is sponsored by 7-Up.

1962
Singer Paula Abdul is born. She is a choreographer and member of the Los Angeles Lakers cheerleaders before becoming a successful singer. Her first big hit is the third single released from her album Forever Your Girl, "Straight Up."

No. 1 Hit: "Paperback Writer," The Beatles.

1973
The stage production of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" opens in London. Tim Curry later reprises his role in the 1975 movie version.

Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein" is awarded a gold record.

1976
Blue Oyster Cult releases the album, Agents of Fortune, which yields the hit single, "Don't Fear the Reaper".

Wild Cherry releases "Play That Funky Music," a song that would make it to #1.

Donna Summer is the first act signed by David Geffen to his new Geffen Records label.

The debut album by the supergroup Asia, entitled simply Asia hits #1.

Steve Miller begins his first tour in three years in Lake Tahoe to support his current LP "Abracadabra".

1988
Over 3,000 East Germans gather at the Berlin Wall to hear Michael Jackson, who was performing a concert on the other side of the wall in West Berlin.

Sunny skies and a mellow vibe accompany the launch in Portland, Ore., of the second annual Lilith Fair. Special guest Sinead O'Connor opens the day with a handful of songs, stirring up the crowd with her usual polemics and "Jesus Is Coming - Look Busy" T-shirt.

Loretta Lynn makes a special appearance on the Friday Night Opry, opening with her first No. 1 country hit, "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin'," from 1966, and follows with "We've Come a Long Way Baby" from 1978. To round out her night, Lynn performs "How Great Thou Art" without accompaniment, for which she receives a standing ovation and finishes with her signature tune "The Coal Miner's Daughter."

The opening date of the Lollapalooza tour - featuring Audioslave and Queens of the Stone Age - is cancelled because organizers say Jane's Addiction's stage won't fit the Ionia County Fairgrounds venue in Michigan.

Prince unveils a new studio album, N.E.W.S., to members of his NPG Music Club website.

Coldplay's X&Y stays atop the U.K. album charts. The 'Crazy Frog" ringtone is still the No. 1 single.
