Paul McCartney is born in Liverpool, England. The Beatles have 20 No. 1 songs, more than any other recording act, and McCartney by himself or in duets has another nine. His biggest post-Beatles hits are "Ebony and Ivory," a duet with Stevie Wonder that stays at No. 1 for seven weeks, and "Say Say Say," a duet with Michael Jackson that tops the pop chart for six weeks.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience makes its debut performance at the Monterrey (Calif.) Pop Festival. After an argument between Jimi Hendrix and the Who over who's going to close the Monterrey festival, Hendrix plays an incendiary set that sees him light his guitar on fire.

London's National Theatre premieres In His Own Write, an adaptation of the writings of John Lennon.

1974
According to Rolling Stone Magazine, Rare Earth drummer Peter Hoorelbeke is arrested after throwing his drumsticks into the crowd.

Abba stages a command performance for the king of Sweden.

Electric Light Orchestra's OLE ELO goes gold. The LP is a greatest hits collection.

Johnny Rotten and Paul Cook are stabbed by a gang who, safe to say, are not Sex Pistols fans.

The No. 1 album in the U.K. is The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl, a live album created by splicing together two performances at the venue from 1964 and 1965.

Boston earned their third top 40 single in the U.S. when "Peace of Mind" peaked at number 38 in 1977. The song was taken from their multi-platinum selling debut album. "More Than a Feeling" and "Long Time" had also been successful on the singles chart, and are still held as rock classics by fans everywhere. The group was lead by technical wizard, Tom Scholz, who later invented the portable guitar device, The Rockman.

The Blues Brothers, starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as the deadpan R&B team, premieres in New York.

At New York's Madison Square Garden, nutty Judas Priest fans tear up hundreds of seats as their idol performs.

A concertgoer sues Motley Crue, claiming that she went deaf because their PA was turned up too loud.

Bruce Springsteen officially separates from wife Julianne Phillips.

1995
Notorious B.I.G. (aka Christopher Wallace) is arrested in Camden, N.J. on robbery and aggravated assault charges.

Beck's fourth full-length album, "Odelay," is released.

1997
Country Music Association entertainers of the year Brooks & Dunn play a special show for their fan club at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. In keeping with tradition, both Brooks and Dunn stick around to meet and sign autographs for all 2,000-plus who turn out for the annual gathering. The pair starts signing at 9 p.m. and wraps things up a 5 a.m. the following morning.

The Walt Disney Co. becomes an even bigger player on the Internet with the purchase of a 43% stake in Web search engine company Infoseek Corp. Disney Plans to launch an Internet portal - a Web site that contains entertainment, news and search capabilities in one location.

Teen Idol, David Cassidy sells a two-CD set exclusively on cable TV shopping network QVC at 2 p.m. ET. The set, on Slamajama Records, includes his latest album, Old Trick, New Dog, and "David Cassidy's Partridge Family Favorites," priced at $18 for both CDs.

Heart featuring Ann Wilson embarks on a U.S. in Chicago. Other tour stops include Detroit and Los Angeles.

2004
Ray Charles' funeral is held at the First AME Church in Los Angeles. Among the performers at the service are Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, and B.B. King. Also in attendance are Little Richard, Berry Gordy Jr. and Jesse Jackson.
