Cash Box lists four Beatles singles in the top four positions on its chart: "She Loves You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "Please Please Me," and "Twist and Shout." Already, Meet the Beatles has sold over 3-and-a-half million copies in the U.S. It's the most in recording history thus far.

Freddie and the Dreamers' "I'm Telling You Now" enters the Hot 100, where it stays for eleven weeks, eventually climbing to Number One for two weeks starting April 10. It will be the biggest hit of the British Invasion band's brief career.

The Kinks' "Tired of Waiting for You" is released and becomes their third Hot 100 entry. It will remain on the chart for eleven weeks, eventually climbing to #6.

1970
A group calling itself "Revolutionary Force 9" takes credit for three bombings in New York City. The New York Times notes a "possible connection to the Beatles song 'Revolution 9.'"


1971
The Allman Brothers Band records its breakthrough album, Live at the Fillmore East.


1976
The O'Jay's enter the charts with the double-sided hit "Livin' for the Weekend" backed with "Stairway to Heaven" (not the same as Led Zeppelin's version). The hit will go on to be one of the three R&B Number One smashes this year.


1980
Pink Floyd's The Wall goes platinum a few weeks into its fifteen week stay at Number One. The two-record set is largely the brainchild of bass player Roger Waters, who now emerges as the group's creative head.

Bryan Adams' "Heat of the Night" becomes the first commercially released cassette single, or cassingle, in the U.S.

Mississippi lawmakers take away a commendation to Glen Ballard, who produced Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill LP. Some of the lawmakers are offended by the lyrics of "You Oughta Know."

Angry fans riot in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after waiting all night for Ramones tickets and finding out they are all gone. Several people are hurt.
