Jazz saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker dies in New York City of heart failure. He more-or-less invented the be-bop form of music and just the week before played at the New York City jazz club Birdland, which was named after him. Charlie Parker was 34 years old.

Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) is born.


1958
Jazz singer Billie Holiday, who had pled guilty to a narcotics-possession charge in 1956, is given a year's probation by a Philadelphia court.

The Beatles wrap up their location shooting of Help! in the Bahamas. In an interview with The New York Times, Beatles manager Brian Epstein predicts that the band will still be popular in 10 years and declares the Rolling Stones "a fine group."


1969
The 11th annual Grammy Awards are announced and Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" is named Record of the Year. Jose Feliciano wins a Grammy as Best New Artist. Aretha Franklin wins a Grammy for Best Female R&B Performance for "Chain of Fools."

George Harrison and his wife Patti are arrested in the town of Esher in Surrey, south of London, on charges of cannabis resin possession after authorities found 120 joints in their house.

Paul McCartney weds American photographer Linda Eastman in London. Paul's brother Mike McGear is the best man, no other Beatle is in attendance.

"Power to the People" by John Lennon is released.

Jethro Tull release their fourth studio album, Aqualung. The first side of the LP contains a series of six character sketches, including two sketches of people of questionable repute (title character "Aqualung" and "Cross-Eyed Mary") and two autobiographical tracks including "Cheap Day Return," written by band leader Ian Anderson while returning from a visit to his critically ill father. The overall message of the lyrics on the second side is said to be "pro-God but anti-church," and makes the statement that organized religion can actually restrict a person's relationship with their God instead of enhancing it. Anderson has denied any attempt to create a concept album.

John Lennon is involved in an altercation with a photographer outside the Troubador club in Los Angeles. Lennon and Harry Nilsson had been heckling comedian Tommy Smothers and were ejected from the club.


1977
The Sex Pistols are involved in a fight at London's Speakeasy Club with Bob Harris, presenter of BBC 2's The Old Grey Whistle Test, resulting in one of the show's engineers needing 14 stitches in his head. Two days later Harris' solicitors contact Derek Green at A&M, the band's record label. Harris' management also managed Peter Frampton, one of the label's top acts at A&M. Green discusses the matter with the company's two founders, Jerry Moss and Herb Alpert, and the decision is made to cancel the Pistols' contract and halt production of the band's first single, "God Save The Queen."

Cathay Pacific Airways announces that it has banned Liam Gallagher, singer of British rock band Oasis, after a fracas on a flight from Hong Kong to Australia. Passengers and crews aboard the flight to Perth claim Gallagher and members of his band yelled obscenities and smoked in the cabin.

Rock act Korn serves a cease-and-desist demand to the Michigan assistant principal who suspended a student for wearing a T-shirt carrying the band's name. Attorneys for the Immortal/Epic rock act serve Assistant Principal Gretchen Plewes, Zeeland High School, and the Zeeland, Mich., public school district with the papers, demanding that the three entities stop "[making] defamatory comments about Korn and its products" as well as "[claiming] to have personal knowledge that Korn intends to be insulting to the listeners of its music."

A private funeral for Dusty Springfield, who died earlier in the week of breast cancer, is held at St. Mary's Church in Henley-on-Thames, England. Complying with the singer's wishes, there are no memorials in London, New York, or Los Angeles.
